Keep three measurements separate

Item weight describes an item before final packing. Packed weight includes the shipment’s packaging and contents. Dimensions describe the outside of the finished parcel. Record the unit for each value.

Do not add unconfirmed product weights from unrelated listings and label the sum a final parcel weight. Use actual warehouse or packing information when it becomes available and update the estimate.

Volume is not automatically billable weight

An illustrative box measuring 40 × 30 × 25 cm has a volume of 30,000 cubic centimeters. That arithmetic does not tell you its billable weight. A route’s divisor, thresholds, rounding and comparison rules must come from its current terms.

This site does not assume a universal divisor. The same box can be assessed differently under different services. Compare the route’s displayed rule and query the official estimator rather than converting volume with a number borrowed from another platform.

Compare packing options deliberately

Possible changeQuestion to ask
Remove retail packagingWhat protection remains and can the change be reversed?
Compress clothingIs compression suitable for these specific items?
Add protective materialHow does it change packed size, weight and fees?
Split a parcelHow do separate route charges compare with one parcel?

None of these changes guarantees a saving. Compare the new estimate and the protection you need.

Save the finished parcel record

Before dispatch, keep the measured weight, dimensions, selected route and packing choices. If an estimate changes, ask which input or charge changed. This is more useful than comparing two headline totals without their assumptions.

For fragile items, a smaller parcel is not automatically the better choice. Make the packing decision using the item’s needs as well as the current cost. Keep the explanation with the parcel reference so you can understand the final shipment later.

Keep this checklist

  • Separate item weight from packed weight.
  • Use outside parcel dimensions.
  • Read the selected route’s own billing rule.
  • Recalculate when packing or contents change.
